The dawn of a new year is chock full of opportunity. Resolutions? I’ve got a few. But if I do one measly thing this year, I want to aim for a life lived purposefully and surrounded by the objects that mean most — in my case, art. Be it a sculpture of a dinosaur that makes me laugh or an abstract that inspires me to see beyond the obvious, I aspire to find the beauty in every day…while editing the rest of my possessions to a minimum. Here’s an inspiring selection of artwork to get your new year started right.

Being surrounded by things of our own choosing~ This is one of the things I love most about being an adult human being. Our homes are our canvas, Etsy shops are our brushes, and their creations are our paint. Let's make art!

I can definitely relate to the time wasting experiment :) Well done to Provax for making a feature of it- I think that's the key to success as an artist, playing is such a big part of what we do....

  • kitschencabinet said 7 years ago

I love this idea. I think those of us who are attracted to etsy, either as buyers or sellers (or both!) believe in surrounding yourself with a well curated collection of possessions that range from deeply meaningful to just plain fun. That's definitely a New Year's Resolution I can get behind!

  • VandaFashion said 7 years ago

  • FeltHappiness said 7 years ago

Check us out for some great original art from Texas! Thanks for this great article, too! I think we need to teach the public about art since that's the first thing that gets cut from the schoo budgets!

  • christineshmisteen said 7 years ago

  • Fiume said 7 years ago

Pretty weird stuff. Some beautiful and some a little freaky. Different strokes for different folks, right? I do like a little humor in art though, personally.

  • mlezcano said 7 years ago

I think it's a great resolution to surround yourself with things you truly love and appreciate and edit, edit, edit, all of the rest of the clutter. These pieces of art are a great way of representing that shift and I think anything that's handmade be it art or something functional are a great place to start.

  • irinisklavounou said 7 years ago

I agree with you Erin, 'art' presents a very broad front in these times. For us makers with our good hands it is really just a short step to realising that we can allow ourselves to act on our imagination and in fact, anything goes. It is a great adventure and we are under no obligation to please anyone but ourselves. And then, who knows, maybe somebody is going to say "wow, that is really cool".

  • nativestrandsjewelry said 7 years ago

Oh Alison, Thanks so much for this post. I am an artist and am just at the beginning; reading and working on figuring out how to present my work in my Etsy store. It is really helpful to read how other artists have done their shops. It's also really great to read about how art inspires and enriches your life. Thanks for being an art appreciator and writing this!
