Grace Wood is a successful Etsy seller who runs her business Grace Wood Designs from a creative design shared space in Sydney. We stepped into Grace’s world and learned about how she manages her business and continues to grow on a day-to-day basis.
Tell us about a typical day in your life:
6.30-7 AM Wake up, eat breakfast, peruse Instagram and read the news
8 AM Go for a walk in the bush, take some photos of anything that inspires me
8.30 AM Make a list of things to do that day (I just love ticking off the items I’ve successfully completed at the end of the day!)
9 AM Respond to emails and do bookkeeping
10 AM Start work in the studio – dyeing/carding/laying out fleece/cutting fabric always accompanied by some background tunes or podcasts or good old Radio National
11.30 AM Morning tea is a banana smoothie. It’s one of my favourite things, I can never go past it!
12 PM More studio work!
2 PM Lunch break
2.30 PM Continue working in the studio
4 PM Pack up anything that requires posting and take to post office before it closes
5 PM Continue dyeing and felting until pack up at 6PM
6.30 PM Start to prepare dinner with a glass of red and some tunes
7.30 PM Collapse on the couch and catch up on whatever HBO series I am currently binge watching, or read a good book
10 PM Bed! I am by nature a night owl but have over the years have developed an ‘early to bed, early to rise’ routine. I feel better and am more productive when I follow this pattern.
Having my own business means that I often work on the weekend – It’s a trap that is easy to fall into! But when I don’t, I love to go for road trips through the country, or go to the family farm and help my parents with the sheep and breathe in the fresh air. My boyfriend and sisters live in Sydney, so you’ll also find me wandering around the beautiful coastlines anywhere from Bondi to Maroubra, or hanging about in a local pub with mates.
Secret Tip to Etsy Success:
“My tip for success is to remain connected. It is easy to feel isolated when you work alone, but consistent contact with others – especially other creative types and mentors – is really helpful in keeping one focussed and on track. Regular conversations about your work and where you are heading with it can really help to rouse inspiration and sustain motivation. I have been a resident at The Design Residency in Darlinghurst for four months now, and the support, advice and guidance I have received from my mentors there has been invaluable.”
